RESUMO

The case study explores COVID-19 vaccination connection to tinnitus and hyperacusis, considering its onset and exacerbation post vaccination. The subject is a 47-year-old woman with a history of bilateral tinnitus, and her hearing history was tracked from 2014 to 2023. An intense episode of tinnitus occurred in 2021, distinct from previous experiences post COVID-19 vaccination, second dose. Symptoms manifested as sudden onset of hyperacusis, pronounced "roar" type tinnitus, and a sudden decline in hearing. Audiometric results showed reduce thresholds in low frequencies and lower speech scores in the left ear. This escalation significantly affects speech understanding in group conditions and noisy environments. There was a gradual improvement in tinnitus and hyperacusis severity, but the subject has a greater problem with speech understanding. The subject's journey involved visits to specialists, multiple testing including neuroimaging, naturopath consultations, and anxiety medication. It emphasizes the importance of healthcare practitioners recognizing and documenting these issues and need for timely multidisciplinary intervention and support. Further research is necessary to better understand the relationship between COVID-19, vaccination, and auditory symptoms.

Noise sensitivity and hyperacusis are decreased sound tolerance conditions that are not well delineated or defined. This paper presents the correlations and distributions of the Noise Sensitivity Scale (NSS) and the Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ) scores in two distinct large samples. In Study 1, a community-based sample of young healthy adults (n = 103) exhibited a strong correlation (r = 0.74) between the two questionnaires. The mean NSS and HQ scores were 54.4 ± 16.9 and 12.5 ± 7.5, respectively. NSS scores displayed a normal distribution, whereas HQ scores showed a slight positive skew. In Study 2, a clinical sample of Veterans with or without clinical comorbidities (n = 95) showed a moderate correlation (r = 0.58) between the two questionnaires. The mean scores were 66.6 ± 15.6 and 15.3 ± 7.3 on the NSS and HQ, respectively. Both questionnaires' scores followed a normal distribution. In both samples, participants who self-identified as having decreased sound tolerance scored higher on both questionnaires. These findings provide reference data from two diverse sample groups. The moderate to strong correlations observed in both studies suggest a significant overlap between noise sensitivity and hyperacusis. The results underscore that NSS and HQ should not be used interchangeably, as they aim to measure distinct constructs, however to what extent they actually do remains to be determined. Further investigation should distinguish between these conditions through a comprehensive psychometric analysis of the questionnaires and a thorough exploration of psychoacoustic, neurological, and physiological differences that set them apart.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of hyperacusis diagnosis in treatment-seeking Veterans, paying attention to when it is diagnosed in conjuncture with common comorbid conditions. DESIGN: This retrospective observational study used Veteran electronic health records from January 2015 to July 2021. Hyperacusis and comorbid conditions were identified using International Classification of Disease diagnostic codes. RESULTS: The prevalence of hyperacusis diagnosis was 0.06%. Veterans diagnosed with tinnitus, posttraumatic stress disorder, headache, or traumatic brain injury were between two and seven times more likely to have an International Classification of Disease code for hyperacusis. CONCLUSIONS: The estimated prevalence of hyperacusis diagnosis using electronic health records is grossly below what is reported in the literature. This is likely due to lack of standardized methods to diagnosis hyperacusis and when present with comorbid conditions, uncertainty when it should be coded as a secondary diagnosis. Future clinical and research efforts prioritizing hyperacusis are desperately needed.

OBJECTIVES: Misophonia is a little-understood disorder in which certain sounds cause a strong emotional response in those who experience it. People who are affected by misophonia may find that noises like loud chewing, pen clicking, and/or sniffing trigger intense frustration, anger, or discomfort. The relationship of misophonia with other auditory disorders including loudness hyperacusis, tinnitus, and hearing loss is largely underexplored. This project aimed to investigate the prevalence and hearing-health comorbidities of misophonia in a college-aged population by using an online survey. DESIGN: A total of 12,131 undergraduate and graduate students between the ages of 18 and 25 were given the opportunity to answer an in-depth online survey. These students were sampled in a roughly 50 of 50 sex distribution. The survey was created using Qualtrics and included the following components: electronic consent, demographics questionnaire, Misophonia Questionnaire (MQ), Khalfa's Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ), Tinnitus and Hearing Survey, and Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI). To be eligible for compensation, answers for each of the above components were required, with the exception of the TFI, which was only presented to students who indicated that they experienced tinnitus. Respondents were determined to have high or possible likelihood of having misophonia if they gave specific answers to the MQ's Emotion and Behavior Scale or the MQ Severity Scale. RESULTS: After excluding duplicate responses and age-related outliers, 1,084 responses were included in the analysis. Just over 20% (n = 217) of the sample was determined to have a high or probable likelihood of having misophonia. The sample was primarily White, female, and of mid-to-high socioeconomic status. There was a strong positive correlation between MQ total scores and HQ total scores. High likelihood misophonia status showed a significant relationship with self-reported hearing loss and tinnitus. No statistically significant relationship was found between misophonia and age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. MQ total scores differed significantly when separating respondents by sex, self-reported tinnitus, and loudness hyperacusis. White respondents had significantly higher MQ total scores than Asian/Asian American respondents. CONCLUSIONS: The estimated prevalence of misophonia was about 8% to 20% of the sample, which agrees with most of the currently published research examining misophonia symptoms in collegiate populations. Results of data analysis suggest that misophonia severity may be related to loudness hyperacusis, sex, and possibly tinnitus. Future studies are needed to further examine the characteristics of these relationships, possibly in populations more optimized to reflect the general population or those with hearing-health disorders.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hyperacusis and auditory processing (listening) difficulties (APDiff) in normal-hearing young adults and to explore the relationship between these two conditions. METHODS: A total of 333 participants aged 18-24 underwent pure-tone audiometry tests and completed the Khalfa Hyperacusis Questionnaire (KHQ) and the University of Cincinnati Auditory Processing Inventory (UCAPI) online. RESULTS: Hyperacusis was identified in 26.43% of participants, and APDiff in 36.04%. A strong, positive correlation was found between KHQ and UCAPI scores (r = 0.603, p < 0.001). Logistic regression models indicated that hyperacusis significantly increased the likelihood of having APDiff (OR 7.688, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Despite the high prevalence of hyperacusis and APDiff in young adults, few seek help from audiology clinics. Our findings highlight a significant link between hyperacusis and APDiff, emphasizing the need for screening protocols for auditory processing skills in young adults due to these conditions' potential social and academic impacts.

PURPOSE: Hyperacusis often leads to debilitating psychosocial consequences, but there is no standard protocol for its diagnosis and management in the United States. In this study, we surveyed U.S. clinical audiologists to understand their education and clinical practices surrounding the evaluation and treatment of hyperacusis. METHOD: An online survey was distributed to clinical audiologists across the United States. Survey responses were quantified using descriptive statistics and inductive content analysis. RESULTS: Hyperacusis definitions and clinical practice patterns varied widely across the 102 respondents. Respondents cited a lack of education and training as the primary barrier to effective audiological diagnosis and management of hyperacusis, with most respondents reporting ≤ 5 hr of hyperacusis education. Other primary barriers to effective audiological management of hyperacusis included time constraints, reimbursement, poor sensitivity and specificity of available diagnostic tools, and poor efficacy of available treatments and management strategies. Most respondents (82.5%) agreed that audiologists are the primary professionals who are responsible for implementing hyperacusis interventions. However, 63.3% of respondents reported that their clinic does not have a hyperacusis management protocol, and 80.0% routinely recommend treatment that is outside their scope of practice to implement (cognitive behavioral therapy). CONCLUSIONS: Clinical audiologists in the United States do not receive uniform education on hyperacusis, and they report multiple barriers to its evidence-based diagnosis and management. Effective hyperacusis management necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. The information obtained via this survey will pave the way toward the refinement of interprofessional education programs and the development of systematic, evidence-based clinical protocols for hyperacusis. Hyperacusis is a debilitating auditory condition whose characterization is largely qualitative and is typically based on small participant cohorts. Here, we characterize the hearing and demographic profiles of adults who reported hyperacusis upon audiological evaluation at a large medical center. Audiometric data from 626 adults (age 18-80 years) with documented hyperacusis were retrospectively extracted from medical records and compared to an age- and sex-matched reference group of patients from the same clinic who did not report hyperacusis. Patients with hyperacusis had lower (i.e., better) high-frequency hearing thresholds (2000-8000 Hz), but significantly larger interaural threshold asymmetries (250-8000 Hz) relative to the reference group. The probability of reporting hyperacusis was highest for normal, asymmetric, and notched audiometric configurations. Many patients reported unilateral hyperacusis symptoms, a history of noise exposure, and co-morbid tinnitus. The high prevalence of both overt and subclinical hearing asymmetries in the hyperacusis population suggests a central compensatory mechanism that is dominated by input from an intact or minimally damaged ear, and which may lead to perceptual hypersensitivity by overshooting baseline neural activity levels.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in children aged 9-12 years in Flanders, as well as to explore the associations with hearing abilities and listening behaviours. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in four different Flemish schools. The questionnaire was distributed among 415 children, with a response rate of 97.3%. RESULTS: The prevalence of permanent tinnitus was 10.5% and of hyperacusis was 3.3%. The hyperacusis prevalence was higher in girls (p < .05). Some children reported effects of tinnitus in terms of anxiety (20.1%), sleep (36.5%), and concentration (24.8%). When listening to personal listening devices, 33.5% of the children reported to listen for at least 1 h at 60% or higher of the volume range. Moreover, 54.9% of children stated to never wear hearing protection. CONCLUSIONS: Tinnitus and hyperacusis are prevalent in children aged 9-12 years. Some of these children might be overlooked and, as such, not receiving the required follow-up or counselling. Development of guidelines for the assessment of these auditory symptoms in children would help to determine the prevalence numbers with greater accuracy. Sensibility campaigns for safe listening are warranted, as more than half of the children never use hearing protection.

PURPOSE: Many workers in developing countries are exposed to unsafe occupational noise due to inadequate health and safety practices. We tested the hypotheses that occupational noise exposure and aging affect speech-perception-in-noise (SPiN) thresholds, self-reported hearing ability, tinnitus presence, and hyperacusis severity among Palestinian workers. METHOD: Palestinian workers (N = 251, aged 18-70 years) without diagnosed hearing or memory impairments completed online instruments including a noise exposure questionnaire; forward and backward digit span tests; hyperacusis questionnaire; the short-form Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ12); the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory; and a digits-in-noise (DIN) test. Hypotheses were tested via multiple linear and logistic regression models, including age and occupational noise exposure as predictors, and with sex, recreational noise exposure, cognitive ability, and academic attainment as covariates. Familywise error rate was controlled across all 16 comparisons using the Bonferroni-Holm method. Exploratory analyses evaluated effects on tinnitus handicap. A comprehensive study protocol was preregistered. RESULTS: Nonsignificant trends of poorer SPiN performance, poorer self-reported hearing ability, greater prevalence of tinnitus, greater tinnitus handicap, and greater severity of hyperacusis as a function of higher occupational noise exposure were observed. Greater hyperacusis severity was significantly predicted by higher occupational noise exposure. Aging was significantly associated with higher DIN thresholds and lower SSQ12 scores, but not with tinnitus presence, tinnitus handicap, or hyperacusis severity. CONCLUSIONS: Workers in Palestine may suffer from auditory effects of occupational noise and aging despite no formal diagnosis. These findings highlight the importance of occupational noise monitoring and hearing-related health and safety practices in developing countries. To investigate the application of combined audiological examination and a self-reported symptoms survey in the evaluation of hyperacusis. Patients who visited the outpatient department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and Otological medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, from January 2019 to March 2021 were divided into a hyperacusis group and a normal control group. We measured the loudness discomfort level (LDL) and hearing threshold (HT) of the subjects and investigated their self-reported symptoms. We compared the demographic characteristics, loudness discomfort level, and hearing threshold of the two groups and analyzed the self-reported symptoms and audiological characteristics of hyperacusis. We considered 87 subjects, comprising 40 patients with hyperacusis and 47 healthy individuals. Among the hyperacusis patients, bilateral disease was predominant. Among them, 33 were females, 23 had hearing loss, and 20 had tinnitus. Patients are mainly in the 21-60 age group. Patients with hyperacusis had low discomfort thresholds at all frequencies except 500 Hz (P ≤ 0.05, mean LDL decreased by 6.14-1.37 dB HL for all frequencies). The incidences of feeling upset, pain, and anxiety or fear were 95%, 65%, and 82.5%, respectively, in patients with hyperacusis. The severity of symptoms varies between patients with hyperacusis and healthy individuals. A combination of LDL measurements and self-reported symptom surveys allows for an accurate and comprehensive assessment of hyperacusis.Trial registration: This study was retrospectively registered (TRN: ChiCTR2100047391) on June 13, 2021.

BACKGROUND: Hyperacusis is a reduced tolerance to sounds that often co-occurs with tinnitus. Both symptoms have convergent as well as divergent characteristics. Somatic modulation, changes in pitch or loudness during certain movements, is common in patients with a primary complaint of tinnitus. However, thus far, this is not documented in patients with hyperacusis. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the influence of somatic manoeuvres on the perception of external sounds in patients with a primary complaint of hyperacusis. METHODOLOGY: In this prospective cross-sectional pilot study, 18 patients with a primary complaint of hyperacusis were recruited at the Tinnitus Treatment and Research Center Antwerp (TINTRA). While patients listened to a 1 kHz broadband noise of 30 dB sensation level, six neck manoeuvres (flexion, extension, lateroflexion left/right, traction and compression), three jaw manoeuvres (protrusion, laterotrusion left/right) and one placebo manoeuvre (hand on head) were performed. The primary outcome measure was the change in the perception of the presented sound in terms of loudness and intrusiveness between baseline and each modulation measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS). RESULTS: No overall significant changes were found; however, individual results indicated that five patients presented a clinically relevant change of more than three points out of ten on VAS in terms of hyperacusis after at least one of the executed somatic manoeuvres. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study did not demonstrate an overall significant change in hyperacusis after somatic manoeuvres but does not rule out the possibility of somatic modulation in some hyperacusis patients. PURPOSE: Hyperacusis is the hypersensitivity to auditory stimuli that would typically not affect those with hearing sensitivity within normal limits. The prevalence of hyperacusis in the general population has been estimated to range from 9% to 15%. There is no universally accepted definition for what defines hyperacusis among kindred illnesses of poor sound tolerance. As a result, hyperacusis prevalence varies more, which has an impact on both assessment and treatment. This study aims to determine the efficacy of the different clinical assessment measures of hyperacusis in assessing hyperacusis through a systematic review. METHODS: A review and reference of literature were done on hyperacusis, and assessment measures were used. A review of 23 articles was conducted to highlight these measures used. Most selected studies included retrospective, prospective, survey, and experimental designs. Study quality reported an overall low risk of bias. RESULTS: This review reports the summary and the current evidence of clinical assessment measures used for diagnosing hyperacusis. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights a protocol that may be used in the clinical diagnosis of hyperacusis. It also shows the necessity to standardize and validate assessment measures for the younger population.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the validity and reliability of the Khalfa's hyperacusis questionnaire (HQ) in Turkish tinnitus patients with hyperacusis using uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs) and to determine a cutoff score for tinnitus patients specifically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty subjects with a mean age ± SD of 45.27 ± 14.43 years ranging from 18 to 75 participated in the study. HQ and ULLs were used as measures of hyperacusis. The participants were divided into two groups due to ULLs ≤ 90 dB in one or both ears (Group 1) and 56 participants have ULLs > 90 dB (Group 2). RESULTS: The mean HQ score of the participants was 19.55 ± 7.18 points, Group 1 (n = 84) HQ mean score was 21.97 ± 7.08, and Group 2 (n = 56) 15.91 ± 5.56 points, and the cutoff point was found 16.50. Statistically significant differences were found between the groups in total HQ (p < 0.001), attention, social, and emotional subscales of HQ. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperacusis questionnaire using with ULLs is a precise tool for the steps of identifying, categorizing, and managing the hyperacusis in patients with tinnitus. However, the effect of the tinnitus on hyperacusis should be considered, because it causes additional problems.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ), whose questions focus on assessing the impact of tinnitus on the patient's day to day activities, mood, and sleep, and not on hearing difficulties. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. STUDY SAMPLE: Data were included for 172 adult patients who attended a tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic in the UK within a six-month period and who had completed the TIQ. RESULTS: Two items whose scores were very highly correlated with those for other items were removed, leaving seven items. Exploratory factor analysis suggested a single factor for the TIQ. A multiple causes multiple indicator model showed significant but very small direct effects of age on TIQ scores for two items, after adjustment for gender. The TIQ had excellent internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha = 0.89. The total TIQ score was moderately to strongly correlated with scores for the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Screening for Anxiety and Depression-Tinnitus questionnaire, Hyperacusis Questionnaire, and Hyperacusis Impact Questionnaire, indicating convergent validity. The TIQ score was weakly correlated with the pure-tone average hearing threshold, indicating discriminant validity. CONCLUSIONS: The TIQ is a brief, valid and internally consistent questionnaire for assessing the impact of tinnitus.

As compensatory increases in central auditory activity after cochlear injury may trigger hyperacusis, hearing and discomfort thresholds to pure tones (250, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 Hz) were assessed in 34 patients with CRPS and 26 pain-free controls. In addition, in 31 patients and 17 controls, auditory-evoked potentials to click stimuli (0.08 ms duration, 6 Hz, 60 dB above the hearing threshold) were averaged across 2000 trials for each ear. Auditory discomfort thresholds were lower at several pitches on the CRPS-affected than contralateral side and lower at all pitches on the affected side than in controls. However, ipsilateral hyperacusis was not associated with psychophysical or physiological signs of cochlear damage. Instead, neural activity in the ipsilateral brainstem and midbrain was greater when repetitive click stimuli were presented on the affected than contralateral side and greater bilaterally than in controls. In addition, click-evoked potentials, reflecting thalamo-cortical signal transfer and early cortical processing, were greater contralaterally in patients than controls. Together, these findings suggest that hyperacusis originates in the ipsilateral brainstem and midbrain rather than the peripheral auditory apparatus of patients with CRPS. Failure of processes that jointly modulate afferent auditory signalling and pain (eg, inhibitory influences stemming from the locus coeruleus) could contribute to ipsilateral hyperacusis in CRPS.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperacusis is reported to occur in 3.2-17.1% of the general paediatric population with higher rates in clinical populations such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although hyperacusis is a relatively common form of decreased sound tolerance (DST), no valid paediatric hyperacusis measures are currently available. The purpose of the present study was to develop and validate a paediatric version of the Khalfa Hyperacusis Questionnaire (HQ) as a first step towards filling this measurement gap. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used to evaluate therapist opinions of the paediatric version (P-HQ) and to field test the P-HQ in parents of children with and without ASD. Total scores were compared between ASD and non-ASD groups. STUDY SAMPLE: Eleven paediatric occupational and speech therapists with expertise in ASD, 64 parents of children with ASD and 37 parents of children without ASD completed online questionnaires. Psychometric analyses were conducted. RESULTS: A unidimensional construct was found underlying P-HQ and all items displayed sufficient theoretical relevance to hyperacusis and adequate psychometric properties. CONCLUSIONS: The P-HQ demonstrates good internal consistency and shows promise as a potential screening tool for identifying DST in ASD. Further research is warranted to establish normative data and validate cut-off scores.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperacusis is known as a reduced tolerance to sounds perceived as normal to the majority of the population. There is currently no agreed definition, diagnostic tool, or objective measure of its occurrence. The purpose of this review is to catalogue the research to date on the use of auditory evoked potentials (AEP) to assess hyperacusis. DESIGN: A step-by-step methodology was conducted following guidelines. Four databases were searched. A total of 3343 papers were identified. A final yield of 35 articles were retained for analysis. RESULTS: The analysis identified four types of aetiologies to describe the hyperacusic population in AEP studies; developmental disorders (n = 19), neurological disorders (n = 3), induced hearing damage (n = 8) and idiopathic aetiology (n = 5). Electrophysiological measures were of short (n = 16), middle (n = 13) and long (n = 19) latencies, believed to reflect the activity of the ascending and descending pathways of the auditory system from periphery to cortex. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this review revealed the potential use of electrophysiological measures for further understanding the mechanisms of hyperacusis. However, according to the disparity of concepts to define hyperacusis, definitions and populations need to be clarified before biomarkers specific to hyperacusis can be identified.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the characteristics of patients with concurrent tinnitus and hyperacusis, determine the best audiological criteria for predicting hyperacusis, and confirm whether objective evidence of changes in the brain exists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of patients with tinnitus who visited the hospital between March 2020 and December 2021 were reviewed. Data on accompanying hyperacusis, audiological profiles, and questionnaires including the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Depression Inventory, and numerical rating scale were analyzed. Resting-state quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) using power spectral density (PSD) and event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) were performed to objectively quantify changes in the brain. RESULTS: A total of 194 patients were analyzed. Among them, 51 (26.3%) reported combined subjective hyperacusis with tinnitus. However, the proportions widely varied from 7.4% to 68.4% based on three audiological criteria for assessment. A higher score on the THI questionnaire was independently associated with the co-occurrence of tinnitus and hyperacusis. Fair agreement was observed between subjective hyperacusis and the audiological criterion based on a loudness discomfort level (LDL) of ≤90 dB at two or more frequencies for the diagnosis of hyperacusis. An increased beta-PSD and decreased levels of gamma-PSD, all-ERSP, and delta-ERSP were observed in patients with hyperacusis (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with co-occurring tinnitus and hyperacusis had more severe tinnitus distress. An LDL of ≤90 dB at two or more frequencies may be applicable to predict accompanying hyperacusis in subjects with tinnitus, and qEEG also provides more objective information.

Background: One of the most common hearing disorders is hyperacusis, characterized by decreased sound tolerance or noise sensitivity. Objective: The present paper aimed to evaluate the validity of the Persian version of the hyperacusis questionnaire. Methods: The sample was comprised of 434 students evaluated at the Kashan University of Medical Science, Isfahan, between July 2019 and February 2020. After translation and retranslation of questionnaire, the content validity was assessed by 15 occupational health experts using content validity index (CVI) and ratio (CVR). Validity and reliability of the scale were examined by using confirmatory factor analysis, the Cronbach alpha, composite reliability (CR), and the average variance extracted (AVE) tests. Results: : In the exploratory analysis of the Persian version of Khalfa hyperacusis questionnaire, 14 items were created based on three subscales) attentional, social, and emotional dimensions) which explained 46.5% of the total variances. Content validity of 14 questions was approved with CVR > 0.49 and CVI > 0.7. The Cronbach alpha, AVE, and CR indexes were calculated 0.811, 0.761, and 0.901, respectively, which showed that reliability of the scale was adequate. Conclusions: : It was concluded that this Persian version of the hyperacusis questionnaire has relatively acceptable validity and reliability in Iran. Given that the tool has a small number of questions, it is easily used in different studies.

Hyperacusis is a recognized perceptual consequence of acoustic overexposure that can lead to debilitating psychosocial effects. Despite the profound impact of hyperacusis on quality of life, clinicians and researchers lack objective biomarkers and standardized protocols for its assessment. Outcomes of conventional audiologic tests are highly variable in the hyperacusis population and do not adequately capture the multifaceted nature of the condition on an individual level. This presents challenges for the differential diagnosis of hyperacusis, its clinical surveillance, and evaluation of new treatment options. Multiple behavioral and objective assays are emerging as contenders for inclusion in hyperacusis assessment protocols but most still await rigorous validation. There remains a pressing need to develop tools to quantify common nonauditory symptoms, including annoyance, fear, and pain. This review describes the current literature on clinical and investigational tools that have been used to diagnose and monitor hyperacusis, as well as those that hold promise for inclusion in future trials.
